The relationship between music and painting is defined by the fact that they are both fine arts experienced through sensation. Music is an auditory sense, while painting is a visual sense. The sensation of the music we hear with our ears can be transformed into a sense of color in the orchestral hues, harmony, and contrasting melodic strings. Each musical scale has its corresponding colors, and each musical instrument is similar in nature to a specific color that creates the same expression and sensation. Mussorgsky was able to achieve the artistic ideal of integrating visual art with music in a descriptive program through the pictorial suite "Pictures at an Exhibition." This research aims to identify the relationship between music and visual art through the influence of examples of paintings by Victor Hartmann on Mussorgsky's musical style in composing the suite "Pictures at an Exhibition." This research follows the descriptive method (content analysis). The research sample includes two pieces from Mussorgsky's 1874 suite "Pictures at an Exhibition": The Catacombs or Roman Tombs, The Great Gate of Kiev, and Hartmann's two paintings of the same title. The research is divided into the theoretical side, which includes the suite, Mussorgsky and Hartmann: their lives, their most important works, and the characteristics of their works. The applied side includes: harmonious analysis of the pieces of the research sample, artistic analysis of Hartmann’s paintings, and examining the influence of Hartmann’s paintings on Mussorgsky’s style in composing his music.
